- Half-term in Koh Samui
The last time I visited this tropical island on the east coast of Thailand was in 1995. I had heard it had developed since then and last week I saw for myself the changes that have taken place since then.
During my children’s half-term holiday from school we took a short trip together to Samui on Thai International (who actually began flying directly to Samui from Bangkok the day we returned to the capital) and Bangkok Airways.
For the first time I stayed at Chaweng beach, the largest and busiest of the islands resort towns. It was crowded and brash and I wouldn’t stay there out of choice again. It was a diluted version of Patong beach in Phuket for me, with it’s strip of overpriced tourist restaurants and shops.

However my children enjoyed themselves and the trip passed without incident, always a blessing when travelling abroad alone with two children.
- Bun That Luang
I arrived back in VTE after a few days in Tha Heua with Da, one of the young girls I had met on the bus going up to Saisomboun. The That Luang festival, probably the largest in Laos had already started and I was lucky enough to catch the closing days.

Along with the festivities I met up with Jo a school teacher from England for a drinking session as well as a few old Lao friends (and a few new ones…).
My last night in VTE was spent in the “Khop Jai Deu” restaurant and then the disco in the large Mekong Hotel, a venue I have been to many times, usually rather drunk, but always fun.
